Uhuru Speech to Uganda parliament has been termed as the most horrible in recent past by ahead of state of a democratic country.
Uganda, a country that is in a firm grip of dictator Yoweri Museveni
is preparing for a general election and looking for a moral support from
big brother Kenya to help foster democracy and freedom of speech, its
on this back drop that many members of parliament found H.E Uhuru
Kenyatta’s speeching underwhelming to say the least.
By Museven playing “Kanu yajenga nchi” for Uhuru, the stage had been
set for a boring speech. Museveni seem to understand that all these TNA,
URP, Amani are all Kanu parties, ideologically rooted in Kenya’s dark
past.
Back to Uhuru, after gobbling up half a billion in the Ugandan trip,
he delivered a spectacularly horrible speech, that’s devoid of
substance, other than deepening the Mugabeisque narrative of “liberation
dictatorship”.
Its the narrative that says, the only way to ensure national unity is
to sit on the people, deny them freedoms, all in the name of fostering
self rule. It’s a narrative that creates a phoney nationalistic aura, by
invoking colonialism and slavery. That even though the citizens rights
and democracy are undermined, Ugandans and Kenyans should rejoice
because the African despot rooted out the colonialists. That even as we
complain of dictatorship, any system is better than colonialism, and so
we should shut up.
Colonialism and slavery is part of our heritage, but Uhuru should
have used those lines to proclaim more urgent and pertinent issues, like
the expansion of freedom and democratic space.
The African is hungrier, thirstier and less free than he was during
the colonial era. The African governments are more corrupt and in worse
economic states than they were in the colonial era. What we sought as
Africans was greater freedoms, but what we got was the subjugation of a
people, whites- whites went, and black- whites took over, and yes, Kenya
and Uganda are Museveni and Kenyatta colonies, where they rule with an
iron fist.
They can work together in denying asylum to opposition activists,
running away from their respective brutal regimes in Kenya and Uganda. I
can bet you this will be on the table. Uhuru will especially come in
handy.with a first congratulatory message should Museveni rig himself
back to another legal term. These 2 countries may work together in the
surveillance and monitoring of opposition activists. Spectacular
failure.
